On Christmas Eve a boy named Finder journeys to the king's castle seeking food for his starving family. On the way he is led astray by an old hunter who is searching for a white stag. At first, the old man's words and actions seem bizarre to Finder, the man's hunt for the "mythical" stag, futile. The boy is afraid, but his compassion for the man's pain and his belief in what is good carry them to the heart of the forest, where the boy glimpses the stag. The hunter-king, healed at last, sends Finder home to his family with food and gifts.
