Cabbage Rose
Text: M. C. Helldorfer     Illustrated by Julie Downing
Picture Book
Bradbury Press (Macmillan) 1993
ISBN: 0-02-743513-X      $14.95

Mocked by her brothers, who call her plain, Cabbage is happiest when she paints. One night a traveling magician gives her a brush that "paints objects real." Its magic is powerful, but when Cabbage escapes from her brothers and travels to the royal city and prince's palace, she discovers something even more wonderful--her own gift for revealing the beauty of the world around her.

Kindergartners and first graders often choose this book as the one they want me to read aloud, and "girls" of all ages like it. The book was read by Kirsten Dunst on PBS's Storytime (Summer 1995).
